Wellness, Clown Ministry & Faith Formation
In an article on wellness on another page in this website, Dr. Hardel stated that people who are not well cannot praise God and pass on faith because that takes breath. It is the Holy Breath of God, the Holy Spirit, who gives life through Jesus Christ. People who are not well, i.e., are out of breath, cannot laugh because laughter takes breath. Laughter strengthens breathing.
In his book The Cross in the Sawdust Circle, (available at the store on this website) Dr. Hardel has devoted an entire chapter to note how laughter is a gift of God. God has given the gift of laughter so that people can celebrate the intimacy of holy family and holy friend relationships. Laughter truly is the shortest distance between people. When we think of the times we laughed so hard that tears ran down our faces or we may have fallen out of our chairs, we are immediately connected to the person or persons who were with us at the ho-ho-holy moment. Laughter is God’s gift so that we can continue to celebrate those relationships, even after one of the persons may have died.
The Holy Spirit forms and shapes faith through personal, trusted relationships. Often those relationships are right within our own homes and extended families. Our communities, congregations, and homes need Christ clowns to reframe the routines of everyday living through the cross of Jesus Christ so that people learn to live well and celebrate God’s grace.
